Find a Trope:
Rape? Claim it's consentual Live Action TV
A rapist claims his victim agreed to have sex. Had this been true, it would have been legal.
Edited by Someone1981No Title Live Action TV
A situation where out of stress, or worry, or (temporary) mental stress, a character whose hair is usually impeccably maintained and/or fussily styled appears with disordered or messy hair. An example would be The Goldbergs, when Beverley Goldberg appears with natural and slightly unkempt hair - at the time she's frantic with worry because her eccentric father has "borrowed" a big powerful car and has, in fact, written it off in a crash. Beverley's normal hairstyle is the sort of Eighties big hair with permanent curls that looks like it might double for a crash helmet, or withstand a direct hit. When it goes natural free-hanging blonde - she's worried. Do we have a trope for this? Thanks.
Confess to an other's crime Live Action TV
A person confesses to the police that they committed a crime he or she didn't do, because this person believes (correctly or otherwise) that the real culprit is someone this person loves. This could be a Mama Bear or Papa Wolf, but could also be inverted (a child protecting a parent), or even not be a parent/child relationship.
Characters name is in the closed captions Live Action TV
So I was watching Twisted Metal (2023) and a character is only named via subtitle/closed caption. Which trope is this?
Potential trope for One Piece Live Action TV
In the One Piece (2023) episode "The Girl With the Sawfish Tattoo", Arlong literally turns one of the Coco Village's houses upside down shortly after he and the Arlong Pirates invade the village during Nami's flashback. In the One Piece manga and anime, Momoo turned the Gosa Village's buildings upside down since the villagers were unable to pay their tribute to Arlong.
Which trope fits this description?
Edited by gjjonesI Need A Freaking Aspirin Live Action TV
In crime shows, there's a tendency for Da Chief to take aspirin/ibuprofen/tums to deal with the stress caused by the people underneath their command. Like I Need a Freaking Drink, but with medicine instead.
The plan is shown being discussed and implemented at the same time Live Action TV
During a scheme by a team or a couple individual characters, the screen or audiovisual depiction either shifts between said scheme being talked about and it being executed, or the scheme being done while the instructions play as a voice-over. I remember first seeing this as an example from the Squid Game "Stick to the Team", but I forgot the trope's name.
I've got another example, though:
- Money Heist: In Episode 11 of Season 1, while going to a bathroom break under Oslo's watch, Jacinto finds the tools Pablo found as part of Arturo's first plan to escape the Mint attached under the lid of the toilet he went to, alongside a note with instructions for the plan. As Jacinto opts to spend the time Oslo gave him to pick up the tools instead, as part of the instructions' first step, what the entire note reads is spoken in voice-over with Arturo's voice.
Splitting the Difference Live Action TV
I'm looking for a trope where a series realizes it's said two things and clears it up by splitting the difference. In Babylon 5, President Clark had been referred to as William Clark in one broadcast and Morgan Clark in another before it was established his full name was William Morgan Clark. In Battlestar Galactica, Commander Adama's late wife's name was said to be Caroline in a flashback in "Act of Contrition" (Season 1, Ep 4), but then in a flashback in "Scattered" (Season 2, Ep 1) he referred to having recently married a woman named Anne. "A Day in the Life" (Season 3, Ep 15) established that he'd only been married once and her name was Carolanne, combining the two names, with "Caroline" presumably a retroactive mispronunciation and "Anne" a shortening.
Edited by NOYB"Same Actor / Diff Generations"? Live Action TV
What's the trope for when the actor for Character A plays A's parent/ancestor in a flashback?
All characters stare at a malfunction Live Action TV
This trope is common with sitcoms and kids shows
A machine malfunctions somehow (either it breaks, catches fire or gets launched into the sky) and all the characters end up silently staring at it and maybe make a funny comment (sometimes a sarcastic or snarky comment)
an example in this scene from the Big Bang theory https://youtu.be/PrX3EmdKtRc. Howard's space toilet sends a meatloaf flying to the ceiling and they are all staring at it
and this scene from Wallace and Gromit https://youtu.be/T0qagA4_eVQ where Wallace throws a ball on the moon and he just stares up in the sky at it because of the zero gravity.
When you are berated for fighting back against a bully. Live Action TV
What is that trope where you stood up to a bully yet you are herated for doing do?
Incriminating knowledge Live Action TV
A gunman shoots from a window down into a plaza. A person down in the plaza points out where the shooter is shooting from. This is ultimately the proof that this person had hired the shooter, as there was no way he could have seen or heard the shooter's location.
Confession to prevent priest from reporting Live Action TV
A person commits a murder. When leaving the scene, he sees a priest, and confesses to the priest in order to prevent the priest from reporting him to the police. Ultimately, the priest is arrested for the murder; luckily the series protagonists are able to discover the real murderer and find evidence without the priest's help.
Forged medical license, decent doctor Live Action TV
A doctor who has been working for years at a hospital is suddenly discovered do be using a medical license which is forged. The discovery is made due to the first case he had of a patient dying during surgery.
Hospital Revelations Live Action TV
Commonly found in Filipino Telenovelas.
- Supporting Protagonist is lying in a hospital bed, commonly an ICU bed.
- Main Protagonist is leaning towards SP.
- SP struggles to talk, but MP somehow manages to make it out.
- SP then reveals key information to the plot.
- SP either dies before finishing their sentence or after finishing their sentence.
- If they didn't die, they either recover very late after a big mess happens, or Sickbed Slaying occurs and they die.
Old Character returning to help other character leave. Live Action TV
Hey guys, I'm trying to find if there's a trope where an old character who previously left a TV show comes back to leave with a current character.
So for example, Character A leaves in January 2022, comes back in August 2023 and leaves with Character B.
Abandoned engagement Live Action TV
An engaged woman abandons her fiancée. She goes out with an other man, eventually marrying him.
Brunette and blonde duo Live Action TV
When there's a duo, (commonly male) Where one person is brunette (or has black hair) and the other is blonde. E.g. Wayne (the brunette) and Garth (the blonde)
Butchering a common saying while still trying to retain the meaning Live Action TV
Think of George Bush's "Fool me once, you can't get fooled again".
