As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
I don't want to have to go through the list manually for this.
NRLEP candidates * ColorTropesCleanupI usually just copy+paste the list into a randomizer and see what comes up first, but this could streamline it completely.
Current Project: Black SheepI love this idea. A discussion in the discussions about moderation thread came up that was related to this, and I think an official version of this idea would be fantastic.
Another reason I personally love this idea as well is that I am someone who is very active in TRS and I have a big list of tropes I want to check. I'm sure there are others like me who have lots of potential projects they want to work on—it would make TRS work much easier and would make it easier for others to get involved in bringing tropes to TRS. People might even be able (depending on how this works) to just plop random tropes that may or may not have a problem in just to see if there's a problem, which could lead to the discovery of trope problems we didn't even know we had.
On the flipside, it could also lead to tropers repeatedly generating checks until they get a result they like—maybe add some kind of restrictions to the feature to prevent this?
Related idea—Amonimus mentioned in the Programming thread that he had created a tool that not only randomly grabs wicks, but grabs the context as well. If the admins could do anything like that, that would be cool.
Edited by themayorofsimpleton TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallYour internet browser is loading pages as text and inserts funny colors and rectangles. Knowing how HTML works is almost as basic as knowing what "Alt + F4" means. In this way, you can make a setup to load 50 random links from the Related tabs and limit the display to where Ctrl+F search lands (oversimplified). I've not pursued the idea since then as it's kinda not allowed, but it's very easy to make.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup^ Admittedly I'm not into programming so I couldn't do it (long story as to how I found the thread), I was just pointing it out so on the off chance the admins did see this, they could see that it wasn't impossible.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallUnlocked per discussion.
I stand by my support for this idea. Could help clear out a lot of our backlog of tropes that need TRS.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallI'd love a tool like this as well. Options for bulleted vs. numerical formatting and copying to clipboard are optional, but would be nice additions.
Honestly a really good idea.
Frequent Wick CleanerYes.
People are asking to partially automate How to Do a Wick Check. At minimum, from all links from the Related tab (example), getting a random (either square of "Found in" count, or up to 50, whichever is larger) links in a list.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupMaybe it should be a button or link that appears on the Related page.
I have created a prototype of this tool in Excel. Here's a demo of how it works. The listing of the wicks takes a while as I have to crawl the pages in Internet Explorer in the background.
Anyone who's interested to try it out, the excel tool can be downloaded here. It contains a macro so make sure you have macro support enabled.
^ Just tested it out a couple times, it works great.
Frequent Wick CleanerThough I believe in the final product, the wick checking tool should also cover potholes?
Frequent Wick Cleaner
Something that would be handy in Trope Repair Shop for checking whether tropes are being correctly used would be a tool that, when you enter a page into it, counts the total # of wicks, randomly selects a portion of those wicks, and generates a list of the selected wicks. That number would need to be fairly sizeable; the count mentioned in the TW thread that suggested this was either 50 or the square root of the total # of wicks, rounded up, whichever is better for the size of the page. One possible option could be for the tool to tell you the total # of wicks and allow you to select a number to pull, or default to the aforementioned rounded square root.
