mudshark: I don't expect Nate to make sense, really.According to the index at Espionage Tropes, there are two ways that a room can be searched, both covered by Ransacked Room: the sneaky way (associated with planting or finding bugs), and the rushed way (typical mess with overturned furniture and scattered items). A trained spy is more likely to be slower and more methodical in their search. A mundane person just finding out they're in danger would be faster and more panicked.
"You want weapons?! We're in a Library! BOOKS! The best weapons in the universe!" — The DoctorParanoia Gambit if the point is at least partly to get them to destroy their own room trying to find the thing.
Finding the bug
A character knows their room has a microphone or camera in it somewhere and tears the entire room apart trying to find it.
